CHECKING THE TEMPERATURE OF OUR PLANET

Hurricanes striking, temperatures rising, heavy rainfalls harshening terrains and people’s living conditions: our planet’s health is decreasing day by day. We now can see many widespread and rapid changes in our climate system, in ways that are unprecedented over many centuries or even millennia. And these changes are already today producing extreme weather and climate situations in every region across the globe.

The main reason behind all these changes is the raising temperature of our planet. Human activity has had a huge impact on our planet’s atmosphere, oceans, and land. Scientific research shows us that, during the 21st century, the global surface temperature will continue to increase and likely exceed 2°. With global warming, many changes in the climate system will become more frequent and much more intense. But here’s good news – we can still make it.

There’s little time left, but there’s something we can do all together to limit our climate crisis. If we want a better future, we all must take urgent action to heavily reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.

WE’RE DOING OUR PART

The vision we, at Ingka Centres, share with IKEA tells us that we’re here to create a better everyday life for the many people, and we believe those lives are truly better when they're lived sustainably. For us, it's about balancing economic growth and positive social impact with environmental protection and renewal. So, our mission overall is to meet the needs of people today without compromising the needs of future generations.

And at Ingka Centres and Ingka Group, we’re determined to play our part and contribute to a better planet. We’ve given ourselves until 2030 to accelerate the movement to net-zero in the retail industry, rethink and inspire changes in lifestyle and consumption, as well as adopt new ways of working and operating our businesses. Because the more people we reach, the bigger impact we will have in helping them live a better life with a lower carbon footprint.

Our main goal is to reduce our greenhouse gas emission of 80% by 2030 (baseline 2016). This means to reach three main goals we have set up for ourselves:

  • become 35% more energy efficient (baseline 2015)

  • we’re aiming towards 100% renewable heating and cooling by 2030

  • use 100% renewable electricity in all our buildings worldwide by 2025
